In 1816, Lord Trevor Montgomery has retired as a spy, a pirate and a hero; but remains an avid notorious participant with women. When his latest fails to arrive obviously entangled with someone else, Trevor moves on after a curse. In the same mansion, Grace Kenwood hides from the unwanted advances of a drunk; only Trevor finds her. He assumes she is another harlot coveting him so with hatred in his eyes he kisses her to teach her lesson; stunned by his audacity and more so by the effect on her spinster heart, she finally stops his advance when he asks floor or bed.

Her father formally introduces Grace to Trevor. She learns to her chagrin he plans to buy Colonel Avery’s run-down farm the Grange in her village. As all the women overtly covet Trevor except for Grace, he wants the minx whose kisses brought him out of his disillusionment though she is “holding out for a hero” (Bonnie Tyler).

The latest Inferno Club tale (see My Dangerous Duke, My Irresistible Earl, and My Wicked Marquess) is a wonderful Regency romance between a war hero who believes otherwise and the parson’s daughter who believes everyone is good. Character-driven, fans will relish the gender war as amazing Grace lives up to her name by her caring for others (but not herself) and expects her beloved to do likewise; that is if he wants to be her hero.
