Affluent dot-com marketer Richie Forman enjoyed his bachelor party when intoxicated he left with his best friend and partner Mark McGregor in the former’s Cadillac. They ran a red light killing a woman. Convicted of vehicular homicide as his blood alcohol was stratospheric, Richie went to prison though he believes Mark drove the car. While he remains hopelessly behind bars, Mark married Richie’s ex-fiancée, Beth Hill.
Finally freed Richie earns a living as a Frank Sinatra impersonator while also doing volunteer work at the DNA Exoneration Foundation run by attorney Marty Lowenstein. Soon after Richie’s release, someone hacks Mark to death in the latter’s garage. The same crowd that hung him the first time, Detective Hank Madden and former prosecutor turned Beth’s attorney Carolyn Dupuy, point to Richie, as does muckraking blogger Tom Bender. Ironically they use his alibi that they did not believe when he claimed he was not the driver as his motive for murder, but this time he has Marty on his side.
This is a great crime caper that grips the reader from the moment a horrified Beth identifies the brutalized corpse as her husband. Filled with two great twists, fans will enjoy this strong legal thriller as all evidence targets Richie in what seems like a revenge out of control killing.
