Scotland Yard Detective Chief Inspector Anna Travis remains in shock with the death of her fiancé, Prison Officer Ken Hudson murdered by a convict Cameron Walsh obsessed with her. To not thinK about the tragedy, Anna turns to her work.

Old Bailey usher Edward Rawlins tells Anna he thinks his twentyish son Alan was murdered though he has no proof. Neither he nor Alan’s girlfriend Tina brooks has spoken to Alan in two weeks, which is out character for the mechanic. She tells the distraught father he needs to report the case to Missing Persons as she only works homicides. A month later, her former lover Detective Chief Superintendent James Langton mentions the MPER Rawlins case suggesting Anna take on the investigation. With no evidence of foul play, Anna and her team look into Alan’s background only to uncover a lifestyle radically different from that described by his father and girlfriend.

The latest Anna Travis British police procedural (see Blind Fury, Silent Scream and Deadly Intent) is an engaging whodunit starring a cop in mourning who cannot move on with her grief as the protagonist is short and nasty to her team; newcomers will classify her as unlikable. The series trademark detailed and profound methodical inquiry feels redundant as Anna and her subordinates rehash what they know several times without adding new information. With her personal life in a coffin, Anna turns to her professional side for solace but without any regard for others.
