Following a "chesticle" workout with her friend Pulitzer Prize journalist Jameson Rook, NYPD Homicide Detective Nikki Heat takes the train to ta murder scene. A frozen food delivery person found a suitcase inside the truck’s freezer. The bomb squad inspected the mysterious suitcase, which contained the corpse of a Jane Doe stabbed to death.

Heat, with Rook’s help, investigates the homicide. However, the detective is taken aback as they find clues to the present day murder with ties to the killing of Heat’s mother Cynthia ten years ago. Knowing she might finally obtain closure ion the cold case that not only made her a cop but enabled her to individualize each victim as a person, they head to Paris to question a close friend of Cynthia.

The forth enjoyable Nikki Heat police procedural (see Heat Rises) continues the engaging metafiction investigative thriller in which TV character Richard Castle writes the novels. The whodunit is deftly handled though some of Heat’s actions are inane and hateful though we fans can rationalize her idiocy as her emotional reaction to her mom’s frozen case heating up. Still readers will appreciate the latest caper of Heat and Rook.
