Summer “Sam” Westin works as a temporary wildlife biologist for the National parks Service at Olympia national Park near Forks, Washington. She loves her work as she relocated Raider the bear and wishes she could get something permanent. Currently she has fire watch duty near Marmot Lake since the regular ranger is on leave. This particular night the thirteen year old daughter of Ranger Joe Choi, Lili, is with her.

Sam hears an explosion and using binoculars sees a fire. She calls it in and with Lilli nearby rushes to the scene to create a fire line. After she and others put out the blaze and she suffers an injury, they find the barely alive body of Trail Crew Lisa Glass. FBI Agent Chase Perez arrives as he pursues robbers and looks forward to time with Sam with whom he once collaborated on a case in Utah (see Endangered). Though already receiving a warning for disobeying rules by rushing to the fire with a civilian, Sam breaks more as she investigates the fire.

The second entertaining Summer Westin wildlife mystery is a wonderful outdoors amateur sleuth though this time the heroine has no reason to investigate. Still her exciting inquiry leads readers on a guided tour of the national park near the site of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight saga. With a nod to Nevada Barr’s Anna Pigeon, readers will enjoy Sam’s latest back to nature caper.
