In 1860 Morgan MacCraig comes home to haunted Ballindair Castle in the Highlands after four years in self-imposed exile in London. He feels some remorse for what he did when he divorced his cheating wife as his breaking up his marriage adversely impacted his family’s reputation. His goal is no more scandals.

The aunt of sisters Jean and Catriona McDonald is the housekeeper at Ballindair and finds maid positions for her impoverished nieces. When Morgan and Jean meet they are attracted to one another. As they fall in love, a compromising position leads to them agreeing to marry as each need to avoid a fresh scandal. However, Jean owes him the truth that she is a Cameron.

This is an engaging Victorian Era Highlander romance starring an earl with a lack of self-esteem and a maid with a scandalous past. The lead characters are fascinating with scandal connecting them in several ways. The key support cast is one dimensional especially Cat the flit, his married philandering friend, and the estate steward. Still fans will enjoy this engaging tale wondering what the McDonald-Cameron scandal is.
