In 1948, Ernst Vogler visits Piedmont, Italy as he looks back a decade to what he did. Back in 1938, Ernest works as a trainee for the Sonderprojekt. When he is unable to use the rails, he hires twin Italian policemen (Enzo and Cosimo Digiloramo) to escort Herr Vogler. The truck is terrible breaking down frequent and rarely picking up speed; additionally only Enzo can drive it while the roads are worse. Besides Cosimo demands a detour so he can spend the night with his Bella. Three days is no longer an option especially when he sees firsthand the classical masterpieces of the ancients that he fears what the Gestapo will do to the masterpieces and the modern day beauty Rosina.
This is an exciting WWII historical thriller that grips the reader with a sense of pending doom yet a feeling of optimism that all this will pass. The cast is powerful as the audience obtains life mostly in Italy as a lesser country cousin to the Third Reich. Filled with murder, mayhem, masterpieces and bittersweet love, readers will appreciate Vogler’s road tours circa 1938 and 1948.
