Tess and Michael Butterfield have been a happily married couple for eighteen years except for one time before they married they separated and almost broke up. They reconciled and moved pass this bump in their relationship and raised their now fifteen years old daughter Emma together. Thus when the call at night occurs that Michael sired a son with Sophia Keating, both are shocked even if his indiscretion happened during the period when divorce seemed imminent; as even he had no idea that he has another child until now. The call only came because twenty-years old Drew is dying of cancer unless he receives a bone marrow transplant and his maternal side failed to match.
Tess and Michael inform Emma that she has a half brother Drew living in Boston. Michael proves incompatible, but Emma is; she is the only hope to save the life of her sibling, a total stranger.
This is an enjoyable family drama starring fully developed characters dealing with a double shocker as they both struggle to cope with the news of his previously unknown son and with his need for an instant bone marrow transplant. Adding to the dilemma is that their daughter is the only match. Readers will relish this fine tale of a New Jersey suburban family struggling to come to grips with a new reality.
