In Timber Creek schoolteacher Copper Wilson has mixed emotions over her two best friends finding love. She is ecstatic that her friends Willow (see One True Love) and Audrey (see Three Times Blessed) have found love with the Gray cousins; but she feels alone as she has no one.
Expecting to be a spinster, she vows to be the best teacher in the state of Texas. However, in her first week as a teacher, the schoolhouse catches fire. Copper gets the kids out by going back inside the smoke filled room to escort the last two out, but suffers a serious ankle injury when the porch railing collapses. Unable to walk, Copper is back on a wagon train led by Josh Redlin to see a physician in Colorado who can help her walk. As Josh and Copper travel together, she finds herself increasingly dependent on the wagon master whom she thought she despised. Instead she sees his caring traits and hate becomes love, but she must persuade Josh her feelings are real and not just gratitude.
The third Belles of Timberlake post Civil War romance is an enjoyable tale with a strong cast especially the battling lead couple. Copper like her two BFFs was badly affected by the Civil War, but was moving on until the fire. Americana fans will admire her courage while rooting for her and the wagon master to change their refrain of I’m Not in Love duet to I Got You Babe. The countdown from three to one has been a fun historical romantic trilogy.
