In 1823 in Kenilworth, England, William Fisk forces his sister Kate to work as a lady’s maid to his wife Rebecca by threatening their mother and brother if she fails to spy on his spouse. Kate likes her employer who is nice to her and others; unlike her mean-spirited sibling.
When Kate and Garrett James meet; they are attracted to one another instantly. However, though he seems much kinder than her cruel brother in spite of the scars he obtained during the war, she learns of his secret agenda. Having lived with amnesia in Belgium until recently, Garrett has come to free his sister Rachel from her vicious spouse by killing William for what he did to him and their brothers at arms during the Napoleonic conflict. William also wants Garret dead. The two deadly rivals pull on Kate’s loyalty, but she distrusts both of them; choosing who she deems is best for Rebecca, her mom and her other brother to receive her support.
This is a fascinating late Regency romance from the moment Kate and Garrett meet at the pool and never slows down as one secret after another is revealed. Character driven mostly by the twin competing engines of love and hate, readers will needs little time to adapt to all that is going on as there are several subplots fueled by the battling adversaries. Although William contains no redeeming qualities, sub-genre fans will know it will be worth the time as A Touch of Scandal is an exciting historical.
