The Colton Heir
Colleen Thompson
Harlequin Romantic Suspense, Nov 5 2013, $5.50
ISBN: 9780373278466
Dead River Ranch wrangler Dylan Frick catches Hope Woods in the stables. When he threatens to call the cops, she begs him not to as that will give her location to her brutal ex-husband. She explains she was in Witness Protection, but her former spouse’s thugs found her so she fled no longer trusting the program. Her Jersey college roommate for a few months Amanda Colton confirms she has hidden Hope on the ranch as a maid and that her new employee is former Miss New Jersey Aurora Worthington.
Dylan promises to keep safe the new maid; whose Eastern debutant roots surface constantly as she never knew vacuums require bag changing until now. In hiding, Hope cleans up the messes made by Tawny and Trip Lownden while avoiding the groping latter and eating the nastiness of their mom, Jethro Colton’s third wife. Several murders have Dylan on edge as reminders that his mom Faye was a homicide victim and Hope is in peril. At the same time the wrangler and the maid fall in love while DNA will determine if he is the missing Colton Heir.
The Coltons of Wyoming (see The Missing Colton by Loreth Anne White and The Colton Bride by Carla Cassidy) is a fabulous romantic suspense that answers several key questions including the biggest but also leaves threads still dangling for a Colton Christmas Rescue (by Beth Cornelison). The romantic subplot is enticing, but it is the taut suspense and the answer to whether Frick proves to be or not to be The Colton Heir that makes this entry a fine Thanksgiving treat.
