Since the death of the Franklin family’s patriarch, siblings Brett and Kate, and their father communicate through Post-its. Thus when their dad asks them to meet him for pizza, Kate is shocked. He informs them that Beacon Prep hired him as the coach replacing legendary Bud Simeon whose last team won the state title and sent five players to NCAA top colleges. He also demands his children attend the same school though he promised not to dislocate them.

Feeling betrayed Brett fails to adjust while Kate becomes friends with Jenna and Ali, and begins dating player Jack Blane. However, at a party, another player Luke assaults Kate. Her dad and Jack demand her silence because the basketball team comes first; while, Jenna and Ali believe Luke as one of the BMOC who can get any girl when he insists Kate came onto him. Only Brett and a student she mistreated Julia believe the ostracized Kate.

Canary is a fascinating high school drama in which the team’s values and needs supersede the individual even in the case of an assault (as affirmed by the Penn State atrocities). Kate is a wonderful character who insists she wants to fit in but her poetry contradicts her claim. With a strong though ironically stereotyped cast; teenaged readers will relish Canary as the heroine’s rollercoaster struggles to survive high school especially when almost everyone turns toxic towards her.
