Miss Me When I’m Gone
Emily Arsenault
Morrow, Jul 31 2012, $14.99
ISBN: 9780062103109
Best-selling author Gretchen Waters is conducting a research trip into obtaining information on her next nonfiction work. Her memoir Tammyland focused on her divorce and her appreciation for Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton. Her new project will follow up with the male country music legends.
However, Gretchen falls down thestairs to her death in a suspicious fall in the Willingham, New Hampshire public library parking lot. She names her best friend since they met as part of the Forrester College class of 2000 Jamie as her literary executor. After reading the incomplete memoir and the notes; Jamie decides to honor her friend by completing the book. However, the sections on the homicide in the late author’s family when she was a child makes Jamie wonder if the fall was an accident, or murder to shut up Gretchen.
This an entertaining amateur sleuth in which the plot contains passages from Tammyland and from the unfinished manuscript. The storyline starts off at a rapid clip, but slows down somewhat in the latter half. Pregnant “Madhat” Jamie is an interesting protagonist and Gretchen (from the grave) is a fascinating haunted soul as they make this an engaging mystery.
