Former Detroit cop Alex McKnight rents cabins on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. He feels for his best friend blackjack dealer Vinnie Red Sky LeBlanc whose beloved mother Hazel just died. Vinnie was further shook up when his mom thought he was his dad who killed three people driving drunk.

Alex is shoked when he finds Vinnie drinking as his buddy has not touched alcohol since his father’s fatal DUI. Soon afterward Vinnie vanishes while at an airport, several bodies are found. The second Upper Peninsula war has escalated as smuggling is big business; and Alex fears Vinnie is caught in the middle so he goes after his friend.

The latest Alex McKnight investigative thriller (see Misery Bay) is a powerful thriller due to the pathos of the protagonist, his BFF and the grief of the Bay Mills Indian Community who have lost a precious revered elder. Though the plot is not new, readers will believe they are in the U.P. guided by Alex whose anxiety and trepidation over what may have happened to his bud will be felt by armchair travelers.
