In 1820 England, Anthony, Lord Rastmoor spares no expense in his desperation to marry off his fickle sister Lady Penelope. To his chagrin, she has been engaged four times; yet remains single and heading to a permanent stay on the shelf.

Penelope does not want to marry, but instead wants to go to Egypt as a student of Professor Oldham. To end her sibling’s latest marital push, Penelope realizes she needs a fake fiancĂ© who her brother will loathe as unsuitable. She selects Harris “Lord Harry” Chesterson, as the perfect ruse to get her sibling to send her to Egypt instead of the altar. Harry notices the scarab necklace the brazen lady wears and knows he is that much closer to finding the crook stealing antiquities. He agrees to be her intended as a means to go undercover in order to catch a thief. Neither expected love to intrude on their respective personal agenda.

Passion and Pretense is an amusing Regency romantic thriller starring two wonderful protagonists who each has a strong reason for a fake engagement, which in turn leads to a comedy of errors involving family and suspense. With ties to Susan Gee Heino’s previous historical tales (see Temptress In Training, Damsel in Disguise and Mistress by Mistake), fans will enjoy the antics of the scandalous rogue and the obstinate lady.
