City of Lies-R.J. Ellory

City of Lies

Overlook, Oct 31 2013, $26.95

ISBN 9781590204658

Almost a decade has passed since former New Yorker John Harper wrote his only novel Depth of Fingerprints. In the interim, he stopped drinking and stopped believing while becoming a Miami reporter who started many things but finished nothing.

Drifting through life, his aunt notifies John that someone shot his father Edward “Lenny” Bernstein when he intervened during a hold-up. He is stunned with the revelation because he was told his father died before he was born and his mom committed suicide. No longer an orphan John returns to New York; home of his horrid childhood, to visit the father he never knew on the comatose man’s deathbed. NYPD Detective Frank Duchaunak orders Harper to leave town for his safety while the cop lingers at the hospital hoping for a breakthrough to nail Bernstein for financing mob activity. His aunt informs her nephew that her brother was a mobster while Bernstein’s top adviser Walt Freiburg tells Harper to stick around town using Cathy Hollander as the lure.

City of Lies is a strong crime drama starring a person with childhood demons that still haunt him as an adult. John makes the exciting storyline work with his obsessive need to know whether his father was a mobster and if his mother killed herself superseding his fear of becoming a hit victim. Readers will appreciate this deep noir while rooting for the protagonist to outwit the mob and the cop as he seeks his gene tree truth.

With his evil minion obeying his bidding, Richelieu continues his quest for the holy relics that would enable him to use Christ’s blood to transform him into an all-powerful being. His prime adversaries, humans (cousins Susan and Wendy, and David) and vampires (Gabriel, Raphael and Paul) continue to oppose the malevolent wannabe deity.

Translating their twelfth century relative’s diary, Susan and Wendy learn what happened to their ancestors Carissa and Fleur who fought this same fight and they hope provides the method to win the war. A the same time Susan and Raphael no longer ignore their taboo attraction as both know the war is nearing an end.

The third Kiss Trilogy (see Kiss of Death and Kiss of Night) is an action-packed Christian good and evil vampire thriller. The numerous subplots tie up the major threads and contain neat spins like the origin of vampirism but also slow the pacing of the overall enjoyable storyline. The overarching theme that anyone even a vampire can be redeemed is reinforced as the sextet team up for the final battle against Richelieu.

Danny Hansen had a very disturbing violent childhood. When he and Renee Gilmore met, they fell in love and he thought his troubled and her amoral past were finally over (see The Priest’s Graveyard). Instead of cohabitating at a condo, in order to keep his beloved safe Danny resides at Basal Prison, a guest of the state for fifty years for two murders he did not do.

An unknown person informs Renee that Danny will die in prison unless he breaks his pledge of nonviolence. She also receives a package that means someone knows the truth that she and Danny concealed by his turning himself in to the DA over seven years ago. A frantic Renee pleads with former cop Keith to keep Danny alive.

The Sanctuary is an intriguing Christian thriller that condemns the failed prison governmental industrial warehousing complex which abets antisocial feral behavior. The storyline engages the audience especially inside Basal though there is a déjà vu feel to the plot as conscientious objector Danny constantly turns the other cheek and totally committed Renee never truly considers an affair with Keith as that would sort of violate Thou shalt not commit adultery.

A Cowboy’s Christmas Wedding

Harlequin American, Nov 5 2013, $5.50

ISBN: 9780373754809

At the New Horizons Ranch in California, Saedra Robbins and widower single dad Cabe Jensen plan the wedding of her best friend Trent Anderson to his BFF Alana McClintock. However, three obstacles hinder finalizing the arrangements. Cabe detests Saedra for reminding him of his late wife Kim and bringing her cat-attitude feline Ramses to stay with her at his ranch. They have only two weeks before the nuptials with no place locally large enough to host the gala in winter. Finally the two wedding headliners are away visiting his family.

Cabe’s teenage daughter Rana offers advice to Saedra and soon the pair bond. Rana pushes her dad and Saedra to spend time together as she thinks their guest is good for her father and for that matter her. She coaxes her father to chauffeur the visitor and into decorating the house for Christmas for the first time since Kim died.

This is a warm second chance (for him) holiday romance that focuses on a grieving adult fearing to move on towards a new love. The lead couple is a nice paring, but Rana is too much Machiavellian matchmaker.

Cemetery Dance, Oct 29 2013, $25.00

ISBN: 9781587674198

Engineer Ross Lowery lost his position at Air Research during the Great Recession and has not found work since. He always sent money to his family when they needed it even when he didn’t have much. However, now that he needs assistance, all (including his siblings) except his cousin Lita ignore him. Though not wealthy, Lita and her husband Dave invite Ross to stay with them in remote Magdalena, Arizona for a few months while he applies for jobs over the Net.

At the town’s New Year’s Eve bash, everyone shoots into sky at midnight; only something falls to the ground. Soon afterward the townsfolk begin to face changes in their fortunes. A rancher’s cattle die with eerie creatures leaving the corpses before vanishing and Lita’s eggs hatch lizards and spiders; Ross receives job offers and falls in love, and a beautician wins the mega lottery. When children vanish, realizing something is not right in Magdalena ever since the creature fell from the sky and altered 180 degrees the fortunes and misfortunes of everyone, Ross believes he and others must rescue the young and prevent whatever is occurring from spreading.

The Influence is a strong horror thriller in which darkness threatens life as the townsfolk knew it. The reactions by the affluent suddenly hammered by bad luck and the threat of poverty, and the impoverished suddenly charmed with a run of good fortune make for a super storyline. With deep underlying social messages from scriptures: “But by the grace of God I am what I am …” and "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (karma aside). Bentley Little provides a taut thought-provoking tale.
